OUR TRANSMISSION TUNING STAGES

PRECISION CALIBRATION FOR PERFORMANCE, SHIFT QUALITY AND DRIVING DYNAMICS

Modern dual-clutch transmissions (DSG) are electronically integrated with the engine management system. When engine performance is increased, torque monitoring, clutch control and shifting strategies must also be considered. Simply raising or bypassing electronic torque limits is often insufficient. Under unfavorable conditions, this can result in clutch slip, delayed gear changes, excessive temperatures and premature wear.

POGEA RACING therefore calibrates engine and transmission software to work together. Accurate torque information is maintained to ensure the transmission control unit can correctly manage its regulation and protection functions. Professional calibration improves not only power delivery, but also responsiveness, shift quality and overall drivability.

The following four stages explain our optimization strategies using the Volkswagen DQ250 as an example. Other transmissions, including the DQ381, DQ500 and ZF automatic transmissions, feature different technical specifications, control strategies and operating limits. Available functions and vehicle-specific requirements are detailed in our configurator. Technical changes and variations may apply.

STAGE 1 | STREET

The foundation for controlled torque enhancement.

Stage 1 raises the factory torque limitation within the applicable technical parameters. Relevant transmission control functions are taken into account, particularly clutch pressure regulation under increased torque. The original shifting characteristics remain largely unchanged.

Correct clutch control is especially important for the DQ250. A transmission may operate normally during short acceleration runs but develop delayed shifts or clutch slip under sustained loads and elevated oil temperatures.

STAGE 2 | PERFORMANCE

Improved acceleration and noticeably enhanced shifting performance.

Stage 2 includes all Stage 1 functions and introduces a more comprehensive optimization of the transmission control strategy.

  • Optimized Launch Control with launch RPM calibrated to the engine's torque characteristics

  • Adjusted torque reduction during gear changes to minimize clutch slip and thermal stress

  • Revised shift points in D mode for smoother power delivery

  • Refined S mode to avoid unnecessarily high engine speeds

  • Reduced shift times for faster, more responsive gear changes

The result is a balanced combination of acceleration, shifting comfort and controlled power transfer.

STAGE 3 | SPORT

Extended torque capacity and greater control in manual mode.

Stage 3 incorporates all Stage 2 features and extends the DQ250 torque release strategy to a maximum of 500 Nm within the corresponding software calibration.

Additional functions can be adjusted where supported by the specific transmission:

  • Deactivation of automatic upshifting in manual mode

  • Deactivation of automatic kickdown at full throttle

  • Greater control over gear selection, particularly during spirited driving and track use

This allows the driver to determine gear changes more independently in manual mode. The mechanical and thermal operating limits of the transmission remain essential considerations.

STAGE 4 | RACE

Comprehensive transmission optimization for extreme performance requirements.

Stage 4 involves extensive redevelopment and expansion of the transmission control software. On a suitably prepared DQ250, this calibration strategy enables torque management of up to 700 Nm and is specifically intended for vehicles featuring substantial engine and transmission modifications.

Technical features include:

  • Extended torque management up to 700 Nm

  • Further reduced shift times

  • Significantly more direct feedback during gear changes

  • Modified clutch pressure control up to 18 bar

  • Optimized K1/K2 clutch crossover

  • Smoother shifting during everyday driving

  • Calibration for our seven-plate racing clutch

  • Optimized thermal clutch management

  • Significantly improved paddle-shifter response times

Stage 4 requires an appropriate mechanical configuration. Actual torque capacity depends on several factors, including transmission condition, clutch specification, oil temperature and the engine's torque characteristics.

INDIVIDUAL CONFIGURATION

Pricing and available functions for each transmission tuning stage are listed in our vehicle configurator. Individual adjustments may be available depending on transmission type, software version and technical feasibility. Our software incorporates technical protection measures against unauthorized reading and subsequent modification.

Important Notice: The stated torque figures describe the respective calibration strategies using the DQ250 as an example. They do not constitute a general certification of mechanical torque capacity or a guarantee of transmission durability. Features, technical limits and availability may vary depending on the transmission, vehicle and software version. The specifications provided in our configurator apply, subject to technical verification.
